Habits that can improve your mood
I think when people hear the word “habits,” they initially think of “bad” habits. Understandable, since that’s what you see in the news and on social media most of the time. But there are certainly “good” or healthy habits as well, and some can help boost your mood.
Habits are repetitive, frequent behaviors that over time can become almost second nature. It usually takes at least 2-3 weeks of consistent behavioral change for a habit to take hold. Once the habit is established, it could still take more time for it to have a positive effect on your mood, so you will need to be patient. Some examples of mood-improving habits are:
· Exercise. A multitude of studies have shown exercise can help your mood. In addition to an increase in the “happy chemicals” in your brain during and after working out, exercise can help eliminate stress and tension in your muscles. Exercise can give you a sense of accomplishment and productivity, and it can have a positive effect on your self-esteem and self-confidence, improving how you feel about yourself.
· Journaling. Writing in a journal can be tough for some people, especially getting started. “What should I write about? “ “I feel awkward writing about myself?” I know, I had trouble with this as well. But after a few tries it gets easier. Journaling allows you to express your feelings, get troubling thoughts out, remember things that happen during your day, plan for tomorrow, or set goals. It can be what you want it to be. People who journal on a regular basis often feel less stressed and “lighter” after journaling. Some find it a great way to start, or close out the day.
· Hobbies. Do you have a hobby? Maybe you have a hobby but feel you don’t have time for it in your busy schedule. Hobbies have the ability to challenge our thinking, our abilities, or just give us a little fun. You can get lost in a hobby, distracted from the stressors of life. Hobbies can improve your confidence, give you purpose outside of your job and family, and improve your sense of self.
These are just a few healthy habits that can impact your mood. Give them a try today!
