about me
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, working with individuals and families who need help or want to make changes with some aspect of their lives. Sometimes people need a counselor to work on developing coping skills, or to work through something painful they have experienced. Others need to work on improving their relationships and their communication skills.
My journey to becoming a counselor started after college. While I had studied Psychology, I wasn't sure what type of career I wanted. My first "real" job after college was working at a group home for individuals who had suffered traumatic brain injuries. This really spurred my interest in the mental health field. Soon after I became employed with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, providing counseling services for the offender population. There I was exposed to a wide variety of mental health diagnoses, and a wide variety of clients. I realized that I wanted to be a licensed counselor, so I went to grad school, and received a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Sam Houston State University in 2003. I continued working in the prison system, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience along the way. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2005, which opened more doors for me professionally, allowing me the freedom to work in other settings. In 2011 I began working as a private practice therapist in The Woodlands, Texas.
Clinical focus and counseling philosophy: I believe everyone has the power to change and improve their lives, no matter what the situation. As a counselor, it is my job to help people realize their potential and assist them in making the changes they wish to achieve. Using a blend of cognitive behavioral, existential, and gestalt techniques, I help clients develop coping skills, identify problematic thinking patterns and behaviors, and improve their emotional well being. My clients are adolescents and adults experiencing a variety of obstacles, including: sadness, anxiety, unresolved trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, low self esteem, anger, addiction, relationship issues, communication issues, work and school-related problems, and stress. My office is a safe, warm, welcoming environment. I am non-judgmental, and respectful of my clients' beliefs and lifestyles.
Self care is very important to me, and that means finding time to relax and have fun. I enjoy watching football and baseball, riding my bike, running, watching movies, reading, cooking, and spending time outside. I am married to a remarkable woman, and we spend a lot of time with our energetic dogs. We also enjoy trying new restaurants, and traveling as much as possible.
