Benefits of volunteering

Between our paying jobs, families, hobbies, and sleep, it is hard to make time for volunteering. It often gets pushed to the side, and knocked down the priority list. Some might think it is only for the wealthy or retired, or for people doing community service as punishment. But volunteer work can be one of the most rewarding things we can do.

First of all, helping others feels good. Whether it is helping at a food pantry, an animal shelter, or building a house, seeing how your work impacts others can elevate your mood. Helping put a smile on someone else’s face can have the same effect on you.

Volunteer work is a great way to meet new people. It gets you out of your comfort zone, pushes you to interact with people outside your normal circle. Working together can create bonds among people, and possibly lead to new friends.

Volunteering can help us learn new skills or information. I used to help out at a local community garden. I learned a ton about gardening and horticulture.

Helping others is a great way to get more involved in the community. This could be your church community, your neighborhood, or your town. You may feel more connected, more a part of the community in which you live.

Finally, volunteering can help keep your mind and/or body active. Doing something different, talking to different people, learning new skills, they are all great ways to stay sharp and cognitively stimulated. Many volunteer options are physically challenging, helping your body stay active.

Consider incorporating volunteer work into your life. I think you will like it!
