Ways to start the day on the right foot
We all have good days and bad days. But did you know there are some steps you can take to improve your odds of having a good day? These are a few ideas you might consider.
Make your bed. Yes, it is boring, feels like a chore, and it’s just going to get messed up again tonight anyway, right? Yes, but making your bed only takes a couple of minutes, and you feel a small sense of accomplishment by doing this chore. You can say to yourself, “Its early and I’ve already accomplished something!” Plus, it makes your bedroom look and feel a lot neater, which can have a positive effect on your mood.
Have a few moments of self-awareness. Ask yourself: How did I sleep last night? How am I feeling physically? How am I feeling mentally? Answer these questions, and make any necessary adjustments/changes. For example, “I didn’t sleep well last night because I got cold.” (Turn up the heat, get an extra blanket, etc.)
Engage in positive self-talk. “Today is going to be a good day, and I am going to do all I can to make sure it turns out that way.” A positive mental framework can improve your mood and positively affect how you interact with others, increasing the chances people are positive with you in return.
Do something just for yourself. You may be taking care of others all day long (your kids, your elderly parents, your co-workers) so start the day doing something that is only for yourself. Have your favorite coffee or tea in a quiet space alone, read a good book or magazine, listen to your favorite music or podcast, or sit and enjoy the great outdoors. Taking time for yourself can help you be better prepared to help others. Taking care of yourself is not selfish.
These are just a few of things that can improve your chances of having a great day. Try them for yourself.
