EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR was developed in the 1980's as a way to treat simple and complex trauma, such as sexual assault and combat trauma. Many clients with PTSD not only saw a reduction in their symptoms, but they achieved the results much faster than other types of therapy. Researchers quickly realized that EMDR can be used effectively for a variety of client issues, such as: anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, addiction, anger and stress, and performance issues.
EMDR therapy is a way to reprocess disturbing and emotionally painful memories that seem to be "stuck" in the brain. Using bilateral stimulation (usually bilateral eye movements, which are similar to REM sleep eye movements) the memories are desensitized and then reprocessed so they are less disturbing.
